David John Plavnicky, founding partner, was born in High Point, North Carolina on March 3, 1953. David grew up in Connecticut and attended Tulane University (B.A., 1975; J.D., 1978). He is admitted to practice in Louisiana (1978), Texas (1988), and all federal courts located in those states.
From 1978 to 1982, David served as an Assistant District Attorney with the Trial Division of the Office of the District Attorney in New Orleans, Louisiana. From 1982 until his entry into private practice, David served as a trial attorney with the United States Department of Justice Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of the New Orleans Field Office. Along with its Houston Field Office, the New Orleans Strike Force participated in organized crime investigations and prosecutions in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
After entering private practice in 1984, David practiced in New Orleans, Louisiana primarily in the areas of brown water maritime casualty matters. In 1989, David's practice brought him to Houston, Texas where he continues to focus primarily on issues of insurance coverage and the prosecution and defense of casualty and insurance litigation. David's insurance coverage practice deals with a variety of coverages including primary and excess comprehensive and commercial general liability, protection and indemnity, maritime employer's liability, charterer's legal liability, hull, yacht, cargo, terminal operators, operator's extra expense, boiler and machinery, business interruption and excess of loss insurance. David is frequently called upon by his London insurance market clients to monitor litigation throughout the United States.
In addition to his direct representation of underwriters in coverage and extra-contractual liability litigation, underwriters have appointed David to defend insureds involved in both offshore and onshore energy exploration and production, including well operators, drilling contractors, vessel owners, and a multitude of specialized service contractors. He has also acted for subrogated underwriters in recovery actions arising by reason of the payment by underwriters of a wide variety of claims.
